Coronavirus survival guide with grandkids

Coronavirus Grandparents Survival Guide

Coronavirus as everyone knows by now is impacting older people the most, especially those with underlying health issues.  If that was not hard enough, many are being forced to isolate themselves from loves ones out of fear that infected family members might pass along the virus to them. Here’s a helpful link to the CDC website to better understand the Coronavirus.

Coronavirus Hurting Grandparents in More Ways Than One

If these health concerns aren’t enough, grandparents are also hurting from not seeing their beloved grandchildren. Personally, I am a grandmother to three beautiful granddaughters, two of whom live right around the corner from me. It’s been two weeks now since I’ve seen them up close and personal. My husband Richard and I saw our youngest one last weekend (wearing masks of course)  but that’s it for awhile until this thing passes.

Coronavirus Survival Guide for Grandparents

Fortunately, there are other ways to stay in touch. Here are some ideas on how you can stay connected with your grandchildren if you’re locked down in isolation.

  1. Use the telephone. The kids will want to talk to you because in all probability they’re really  bored without school, play groups, sports, etc.
  2. Face time them (if you have it). This is a great way to interact with the kids. You can read them books at bedtime or play brain teasers during the day to stimulate their brain.
  3. Write them notes and letters. Writing is a lost art, except for short texts and emails. Sit down and write them an old fashion letter. Encourage them to answer in kind.
  4. Cook their favorite things. The way to a person’s heart is still very much through their stomach! Delivery may be an issue, especially if they don’t live close.
  5. Tell them how much you love them and reassure them that everything is going to be okay. Remember, kids especially have a hard dealing with scary events such as this. Your reassurances will go a long way to calming their fears.

Finally,  the Coronavirus is something we’ll all have the deal with for better or worse. No one knows how bad things will get or how long this will last . But I for one have confidence that our Government, Healthcare System and Private Enterprise will get us through this in tact.

Stay safe everyone and remember to stay connected to the ones you love, especially the little ones.
