The recent birth of my granddaughter Ophelia brought to mind the importance of Choosing a Baby’s Name. Actually, this is one of the most consequential decisions expectant parents can make for their child. That’s because a name plays a large part in shaping one’s personality for years to come.

Seven things to consider when Choosing a Baby’s Name

• Do both parents love the name and like saying it?
• What is your style? Do you tend to like popular names of the day or are you looking for something more unique and distinctive?
• Will the name age well? Remember, the name you choose will carry with the child into adulthood.
• Does the name have strong positive associations?  Names that remind others of negative people or events should be avoided.
• Will your child like saying their name? Parents must avoid choosing a name they love and consider the name from their child’s point of view.
• Are there hidden pitfalls in the name? For instance, will the child’s initials form a distasteful word.
• Consider waiting until baby is born before deciding on a name. This is a smart option for parents who are undecided. Seeing your baby for the first time can help lead to the right choice.

Meet Ophelia Paige 

The latest addition to our family is a sweetheart named Ophelia Paige.  Ophelia arrived in late August and has quickly won the hearts of everyone, including my two other young granddaughters, Alessandra and Jessa. Ophelia is a happy baby that loves to smile and coo.

Ophelia in Greek means “help”.  A popular misconception is that Ophelia is part of Greek Mythology. It is not. In all likelihood the name was created by the 15th century poet Jacopo Sannazaro for a  character in his poem Arcadia.

Jessica & Adam hit it out of the park when they chose to name their first child Ophelia. Ophelia happens to be a beautiful name that’s neither too common nor too obscure. It’s a strong feminine name that will age gracefully with Ophelia. By the way, the inspiration for choosing the name came from hearing the Lumineers song, Ophelia.
