Silly Phillie Ready to Gallop Ahead Post COVID-19!

Post COVID-19 is finally beginning. Infections, hospitalizations and deaths are all trending down. Businesses are slowing opening again. People are also getting back to work. Importantly, we must all do this sensibly. This means wearing masks, continuing to practice social distancing. and staying home when not feeling well. The possibility of a second wave of this nasty COVID-19 virus occurring will be greatly reduced if we all follow these guidelines.

Monday June 8th is the first day back to work for Silly Phillie since Mid-March when NYC was shut down due to COVID-19. Needless to say, the impact has been devastating financially and personally for all involved. However, Sily Phillie is determined to return stronger than ever even if it takes awhile to recover fully.

For example, Silly Phillie is launching several new and exciting baby gifts to coincide with returning to business. In addition, the company has also created a new line of face masks for children 2-5 years of age. These masks are designed to be both protective, and stylish enough to encourage kids to wear them. More about Silly Phillie face masks will be covered in a separate post.

As a baby gift designer I am well aware of the various Baby Shower Themes used by expectant parents. Some themes are classic, while others trendy. But a unified theme definitely adds to the appearance and festiveness of a baby shower.

Baby Shower Themes-Unicorns

I had the pleasure this past weekend of attending a fantastic baby shower. The shower was given for my dear friend Corrie’s daughter-in-law, Ashley. It was a tastefully done affair in every way. Ashley is expecting her first so everything had to be perfect. She and her husband Michael choose to name their new daughter Oliva, and picked Unicorns as the the theme for the shower.

There were Unicorns everywhere you looked. From table decorations, to wall posters, to the party cake. I even got to take home several delicious Unicorn cookies for my two granddaughters. Little girls love Unicorns. How do I know this? Both my granddaughters sleep in Unicorn pajamas and go to school with Unicorn lunch bags and pack packs!

I saw many beautiful baby gifts at the shower. For my gift, I created a magical Wood Unicorn rocker, personalized for Oliva. It’s always a source of excitement whenever Silly Phillie® is asked to make a celebrity baby gift. Hoda Kotb is the latest celebrity to receive a Silly Phillie baby gift. As many of you know, Hoda Kotb is a noted newscaster and co-hosts NBC’S Today Show.

Ms. Kotb recently revealed that she adopted a baby girl and named her Haley Joy. It was an emotional event to say the least. Ms. Kotb battled cancer more than 10 years ago, leaving her unable to conceive a child. She is experiencing the joy of motherhood for the first time at the age of 52.

But there ‘s more good news for Hoda Kotb. Soon after adopting Haley Joy she announced plans to marry her boy friend, Joel Schiffman. Mr. Schiffman, 58 years of age, is Vice President & Director, Financial Institutions at Janus Capital Group. The two have been dating for 5 years and living together for over a year.

Unique baby gifts for girl surprisingly are not that easy to find. Not because there’s a lack of choices. Quite the contrary. The market is inundated with baby girl gifts making it difficult to sort through the clutter.

Another factor is that most baby gifts for girl look too much alike. Unfortunately, many product designers/manufacturers are content to offer “me to” products rather than coming up with original design ideas. This a pet peeve of mine as a designer, but that’s a subject for another day.

Silly Phillie’s Original Baby Hoagie™ made the list of Cool Gifts for Kids published by Real Simple Magazine. In fact, it is number twenty two out of seventy seven selected products. I am thrilled to have one of our most unique baby gifts recognized in such a way.

The origins of the Original Baby Hoagie™

The Original Baby Hoagie™ was conceived as a one time baby shower centerpiece for my niece Lainie Wilker’s baby shower. The shower was to be hosted by my sister Ricki Block at her home in San Diego, California. I naturally wanted to contribute something special to the occasion as Lainie’s aunt and professional baby gift designer. I also wanted it to have a definite East Coast flavor being that I am from New York.

My thought process led me to doing a spoof of a food related item. Specifically, I settled upon creating a Hoagie sandwich made exclusively from layette items for baby. My sister was a little apprehensive about the idea. She was concerned that a whimsical rendition of a Hoagie might not be “sophisticated” enough for her fashionable West Coast lady friends.

Reaction to the Original Baby Hoagie™

The Original Baby Hoagie™ was the hit of my nieces’s baby shower I am happy to report. Everyone absolutely loved it. In fact, I left the baby shower inundated with orders from my sister’s friends! Needless to say Ricki was very proud of her baby sister and I think more than a little bit relieved.

The Original Baby Hoagie™ went into production as soon as I returned to New York. Fortunately, It became an immediate hit everywhere it was sold. That was quite some time ago. Today, the Original Baby Hoagie™ remains one of Silly Phillie’s best selling gifts and most talked about products.

I’d like to give a special note of thanks to Victoria Sanchez-Lincoln, Fashion Director at Real Simple. She discovered the product at a public relations event earlier this year and was influential in getting it on the list of Cool Kids for Kids published by Real Simple.
